As a result of a recent partnership between the two organizations, the American Salvage Association (ASA) and the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI) are pleased to announce a joint event to be held in Panama from August 1-2nd. This event will be held in tandem with the Conferencia Annual Martima de Panama. The ASA-ADCI event will bring together hemispheric members from both organizations to develop collaborations on related work, as well as to pursue opportunities to further their aligned missions.
In an effort to protect whales and cut ship emissions, California continues its Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program and establishes voluntary vessel speed reduction zones in the Santa Barbara Channel region and San Francisco Bay area between 1 July 2018 and 15 November 2018.
Celebrating 12 years of existence, the Steering Committee of INTERMEPA, the International Marine Environment Protection Association, convened in Athens yesterday, 7 June, on the occasion of Posidonia 2018. Present Members of the Committee were Warwick Norman, Chairman of AUSMEPA, George Tsavliris, Chairman of CYMEPA, Dr. George Gratsos and Capt. Dimitris Mitsatsos, Chairman and Director General of HELMEPA respectively, Joseph Hughes and Carleen Lyden-Walker, Chairman and Executive Director of NAMEPA respectively and Sadan Kaptanoglu, Chairperson of TURMEPA. HELMEPA’s BoD Treasurer Nicolas Bafaloukos and Legal Advisor Nicolas Gerassimou together with Christiana Prekezes, Executive Coordinator and Costas Triantafillou, Assistant Executive Coordinator, were also in attendance.

Much of our attention these past few weeks has been focused on the “what” needs to be done in order to meet the MEPC guideline for ship emission reductions of ½ by 2050 over 2008 levels. Now we need to address getting to the “how”. We must work collaboratively to identify and implement strategies for achieving this goal.

Delighted to see the report by the International Transport Forum outlining ways in which ships and ports can work together to reduce CO2. We can no longer work in silos, with ships not understanding the challenges ports face, and vice-versa. We need collaboration to decarbonize the entire transportation chain.

It is critically important that tomorrow’s officers have the tools they need to embrace compliance. For the past few years, we have been talking about decarbonization by 2050. Now the date being suggested is 2035. I was in Copenhagen last week where the primary topic of conversation was decarbonization and strategies to achieve that. As an industry we have the opportunity to be proactive, rather than reactive. It won’t be easy—but nothing in shipping IS easy. We need to agree on a global strategy to move forward as an industry committed to Save Our Seas.
