Interested in marine science education, the maritime industry or digital media marketing?  Apply for an internship with NAMEPA and explore new waters! 

Education and Outreach Internship:

The Education and Outreach Internship is designed for college students and high school seniors or juniors who would like to gain experience in teaching marine and environmental science.  Interns will assist and work alongside education department staff in designing, planning and implementing outreach programs for students K-12.   Interns will also have the opportunity to engage and educate the public thought events such as beach clean-ups as well as attend networking events.

The internship will include writing of articles/blogs on current marine science news and/or topics of interest.   The intern will be involved in administrative and organizational support to the NAMEPA team including assisting with marketing materials, data entry and general office/administrative support.

This internship can be done remotely, but the intern will gain more worthwhile experience if able to travel to Weston, CT (as COVID restrictions permit) for various events, educational programs, field work (seasonal) and office meetings. 

Preferred Skills, Experience and Interests: 

  • Pursuing or hold a degree in marine science, natural resources, education or related field with coursework in at least one of the following: marine science, ecology, marine biology, environmental science, or similar subject matter
  • Interest in marine environment and education, with a passion for protecting ocean ecosystems and resources
  • Interest and/or experience writing school age programs and developing engaging educational resources related to marine sciences or environmental science
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Interest and/or experience working with youth of all ages and backgrounds
  • Organized, timely, and a positive attitude
  • Familiar with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs
  • Experience with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms

Intern Hours: 20-30 hours per week (flexible)

Compensation: Unpaid, several stipend opportunities available per year

Who are we?

The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) was officially launched in 2007. It is a maritime industry-led organization that engages marine businesses, government and the public to "Save Our Seas" by promoting sound environmental practices. NAMEPA operates as a nongovernmental organization committed to preserving the marine environment through educating seafarers, port communities and students about the need, and strategies, for protecting this important global resource.

Industry Internship:

The Industry Internship is designed for college students and high school seniors or juniors who would like to gain experience in the maritime industry.   Interns will assist and work alongside NAMEPA staff in researching and promoting industry best management practices.  The internship will include engaging with industry professionals in line with NAMEPA’s mission as well as attending and reporting on webinars/meetings.

The internship will include writing of articles/blogs on current maritime industry events and news interests. The intern will be involved in basic administrative and organizational support to the NAMEPA team including assisting with marketing materials, data entry and general office support.

This internship can be done remotely, but the intern will gain more worthwhile experience if able to travel to Weston, CT for various events, educational programs, and office meetings.

Marketing – Digital Media Internship:

The Marketing and Digital Media Internship is designed college students and high school seniors or juniors who would like to gain experience in multi-media marketing campaigns.  The intern will create and implement (once approved) a maritime and/or marine campaign aligned with NAMEPA’s Save Our Seas Mission.  The campaign will be based on their own research into current news, developing technologies and discoveries.  The intern will work closely and collaborate with the team to determine the target audience and best platforms to reach/engage audiences.

Additional responsibilities as needed to support and assist the Digital Marketing team.

Preferred skills, interest and experience:

  • Experience using various social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube)
  • Interest in the marine environment and maritime industry
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Software (word, power point, publisher, etc.)
  • Video and graphics software editing a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Organized, timely, and a positive attitude
  • File sharing and storage is a plus

Intern Hours: 20-30 hours per week (flexible)
