NAMEPA member Scorpio Tankers is taking a bold step forward and partnering with Ampera to explore nuclear-powered shipping through advanced microreactor technology. With a $10M investment, the initiative is focused on developing zero-carbon power solutions not only for vessels, but also for offshore assets and port infrastructure—expanding the conversation well beyond traditional fuels.
The project’s initial phase centers on floating nuclear power barges, but the long-term vision is far more ambitious: commercial nuclear-powered ships that could significantly reshape how the industry approaches decarbonization, energy security, and operational efficiency.
As the maritime sector continues to navigate increasingly complex regulatory, environmental, and geopolitical pressures, innovations like this underscore the importance of forward-thinking leadership and scalable solutions. From alternative fuels to next-generation propulsion, the path to net-zero will require bold investments, collaboration, and a willingness to explore new frontiers.
At NAMEPA, we’re proud to see our members leading these critical conversations and helping drive the industry toward a more sustainable future.
