September 24, 2024 – The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) recently convened its regional gathering in Fort Lauderdale at Port Everglades bringing together the maritime community of Florida to foster collaboration and raise awareness about sustainable practices in the industry.
Hosted by Port Everglades, this event served as a pivotal platform for industry leaders, educators, and community stakeholders to unite in addressing the unique challenges faced by the maritime sector in Florida. Molly Dushay, Executive Director of NAMEPA, emphasized the significance of bringing the industry together for workshops, stating, “These gatherings are vital for recognizing the needs within our industry and collaborating on the support required to address them. By engaging in meaningful discussions, we can identify opportunities and gaps and work together to promote the positive and impactful efforts already underway. Our collective commitment is essential for advancing the maritime community and ensuring its continued success.”
Attendees were inspired by insightful presentations that highlighted the strengths of Florida’s maritime community. Ashley Hill, Florida Regional Coordinator for the NOAA Marine Debris Program, showcased ongoing projects aimed at combating marine debris, emphasizing the need for community involvement in these initiatives. Her presentation sparked engaging discussions on the current opportunities and challenges in protecting Florida’s marine ecosystems.
Richard Pruitt, Vice President of Environmental Operations at Carnival Cruise Line, delivered a compelling presentation on Carnival’s sustainability achievements and future goals, illustrating the cruise industry’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact while enhancing maritime operations. His insights not only showcased Carnival’s leadership but also highlighted the collective strengths of the maritime community in driving positive change.
Glenn Wiltshire, Deputy Port Director at Port Everglades, also shared valuable insights on the port’s environmental initiatives. He discussed various sustainability efforts the port has undertaken to balance economic growth with responsible environmental practices, reinforcing the critical role that ports play in bridging commerce and conservation.
The gathering fostered meaningful discussions on:

The NAMEPA Team also received a tour of the recently re-developed Seafarers’ Houst at Port Everglades, guided by Alexandra Anagnostis, Founder and President of Total Marine Solutions. This tour underscored the center’s enhancements and its vital role in supporting seafarers and fostering connections within the maritime industry.
As NAMEPA continues to advance its Regional Initiative, the gathering at Port Everglades has reinforced the commitment of Florida’s maritime community to work together in promoting awareness and collaboration. Following similar successful regional events in Houston, Washington D.C., and California, NAMEPA remains dedicated to fostering a network of maritime engagement across the industry.
