WASHINGTON DC – MARCH 26 -- The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) has announced National Maritime Week to be held in Washington, D.C. from May 21-23rd. During this week of collaboration and celebration of the maritime industry, NAMEPA will be holding its annual Safety at Sea Seminar which also features the presentation of the United States Coast Guard’s AMVER and Benkert Awards. This in-person event will begin at 1200 with a networking lunch followed by the commencement of the program at 1300 and will be hosted at ABS’ Office at 80 M Street.

The United States is a maritime nation, and its maritime stakeholders need to demonstrate the dependence of our nation on this vital industry,” stated Carleen Lyden Walker, Co-Founder and CEO of NAMEPA. “We need to underscore this invaluable relationship by coming together to address core issues such as decarbonization, safety at sea, workforce development and incident response.”

Events during the week will include Blue Sky Maritime Coalition’s Policy Regulatory and Initiatives / Finance, Commercial & Chartering Workshop; MARAD’s National Maritime Day celebration followed by NAMEPA’s Safety at Sea Seminar and the presentation of the USCG’s AMVER and Benkert Awards; the Propeller Club of Washington, D.C.’s National Maritime Day Reception; NAMEPA’s Regions – D.C. Metro Area gathering focusing on workforce development and the OPA 90 Forum event.

The Safety at Seminar’s Keynote address will be given by Mr. Kack Kammerer, Executive Director, U.S. DoT Maritime Administration. RADM James Watson, United States Coast Guard (Ret) and Co-Author of ZERO POINT FOUR will set the stage and discuss U.S. Leadership’s role in securing America’s maritime future followed by discussion on core maritime issues surrounding safety at sea.

This year the Safety as Sea Seminar will include presentation of the USCG’s AMVER Awards and the Benkert Awards. Special remarks will be given prior to the presentation of the awards by Admiral Linda Fagan, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard who will participate in the presentation. The AMVER Awards Program was inaugurated in 1971 to recognize those vessels which regularly participate in the AMVER system. Extremely favorable response from the merchant shipping industry worldwide to the idea of annual AMVER awards has ensured the program's continuance. This will be followed by the presentation of the United States Coast Guard’s prestigious Benkert Awards for environmental excellence.
