NAMEPA Announces Next Regional Gathering and Workshop in Washington, D.C. – Shaping the Future of the Maritime Industry, Marine Protection, and Stakeholder Collaboration

March 13, 2024 — The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), an organization dedicated to promoting sustainable practices and awareness of the maritime industry, announced its next regional gathering and workshop in Washington, D.C., taking place on Thursday, May 23rd, as part of National Maritime Week.

Building on the success of its inaugural regional event in Houston, Texas, NAMEPA’s Washington, D.C. – Metropolitan gathering will convene industry leaders, educators and community stakeholders to delve into a critical topic: workforce development in the maritime industry.

“Our Houston gathering served as a springboard for fostering collaboration and identifying key challenges facing the maritime industry on a regional level,” said Carleen Lyden Walker, Co-Founder and CEO of NAMEPA. “We’re excited to bring this focus to our nation’s capital during National Maritime Week, where we can collectively explore best practices and strategize solutions to ensure a skilled and vibrant maritime workforce for the future.”

The Washington, D.C. gathering, and workshop will serve as a platform for open dialogue on critical aspects of workforce development, including:

  • Strategies for attracting young people to maritime careers
  • Bridging the skills gap and fostering a diverse talent pipeline
  • The importance of education and training programs
  • Collaboration between industry, educational institutions, and government agencies

By sharing best practices and igniting collaborations, NAMEPA aims to develop a comprehensive action plan to address workforce development challenges and ensure a robust maritime industry for years to come. NAMEPA’s regional gathering and workshop coincides strategically with National Maritime Week, a week-long celebration in the United States recognizing the significant contributions of the maritime industry to the nation’s economy and security. This timely alignment allows NAMEPA to leverage the national focus on maritime issues and engage a broader audience in discussions on workforce development, a critical factor for the industry’s continued success.
