Collaboration Charts a Course for NY Harbor Middle Schools Students to Explore SUNY Maritime’ Empire State VI Training Ship

March 6, 2024 — The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), an organization dedicated to promoting sustainable practices and awareness of the maritime industry, the Maritime Association of the Port of New York-New Jersey, and New York Cruise Lines recently demonstrated the combined power of individuals and organizations in facilitating an unforgettable learning experience for New York Harbor Middle School (NYHMS) students to visit the State University of New York Maritime College (SUNY Maritime College). This experience demonstrates the collective impact that individuals and organizations can achieve together.

The newly constituted New York Harbor Middle School wanted its students to visit SUNY Maritime’s new training ship, the Empire State VII.  The aspiration was doomed, however, as the 110 students and faculty needed transportation to the location in the Bronx.  In a testament to the remarkable impact that can be achieved through collective action, NAMEPA Co-Founder and CEO, Carleen Lyden Walker reached out to the Maritime Association of the Port of NY & NJ, where Executive Director Stephen Lyman engaged with their member, New York Cruise Lines, Inc., and its managing director, Robert Maher. Together, they seamlessly orchestrated the experience and made the trip a reality.

Noteworthy in this venture was the strategic choice of the launch and return location – the iconic Ikea Brooklyn. The initiative to make NYHMS students the “crew for a day” was made possible on board a NY Water Taxi, whose dedicated crew played a pivotal role in bringing this unique experience to life. This extraordinary experience stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished when passionate individuals and organizations unite with a shared commitment.
