NAMEPA Launches Regional Initiative in Houston: Shaping the Future of the Maritime Industry, Marine Protection, and Stakeholder Collaboration

February 12, 2024 – The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), an organization dedicated to promoting sustainable practices and awareness of the maritime industry, announced today its first regional efforts in the dynamic port city of Houston. This strategic choice recognizes Houston’s unique position as a maritime powerhouse, playing a critical role not only in the city’s economic lifeblood, but also shaping the state and national economies.

Join NAMEPA on Tuesday, February 27th from 1600 to 1800 at the West Gulf Maritime Association for a networking and collaboration workshop. Maritime industry members, teachers and educators, students, environmental organizations, and state and federal agencies are all welcome to participate in discussions on Houston and Gulf Coast initiatives.

This workshop marks the launch of NAMEPA’s regional initiatives, designed to amplify collaboration and awareness of the maritime industry and marine environment while tackling challenges head-on. These initiatives will function as bridges, connecting industry leaders, educators, and community members in a shared mission. By fostering meaningful communication and building trust, NAMEPA aims to spark collaborative action on critical issues specific to each region such as:

  • Raising maritime awareness: Educating the public about the industry’s vital role in the economy and the environment.
  • Combating marine debris: Working together to mitigate pollution and protect our shared marine ecosystems.
  • Investing in workforce development: Cultivating a skilled and environmentally aware maritime workforce for the future.
  • Engaging in public outreach: Inspiring communities to actively champion the protection of our ocean.

Beyond fostering local connections, these regional initiatives will unlock access to NAMEPA’s extensive resources. Communities will gain valuable best practices, educational materials, and expert networks, empowering them to tackle local challenges effectively. This deeper engagement allows NAMEPA to tailor programs and campaigns to address the specific priorities of each community.

The focus on regional needs goes beyond local action. By understanding and addressing these diverse challenges, NAMEPA aims to amplify public awareness of the maritime industry’s role, inspire communities to actively champion the protection of our marine ecosystems and cultivate a skilled and environmentally aware maritime workforce.

“This regional focus allows us to work together, addressing the unique challenges facing each community and ensure a thriving maritime industry alongside a healthy marine environment for all,” said NAMEPA CEO, Carleen Lyden Walker.

We invite all stakeholders committed to a sustainable future for Houston and the Gulf’s maritime industry and marine environment to join us. Let us know you’re coming by registering here!
