NAMEPA Celebrates 15th Anniversary to Save our Seas – Winners of its Marine Environment Protection Awards Recognized
November 7, 2022: The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) celebrated its 15th anniversary recently in New York with a conference and a recognition of industry achievements in marine environment protection. Maritime professionals, students, conservation groups and regulators joined to recognize the many contributions of NAMEPA to the global maritime industry, and the efforts of industry groups.
The daylong event was held aboard the Hornblower Infinity docked along the Hudson River in lower Manhattan and featured a discussion around “Gazing into the Crystal Ball: The Next 15 Years of Maritime” led by USCG RDML Wayne Arguin along with NAMEPA Chairman Joe Hughes, who is also the Chairman of the Shipowners Claims Bureau. Scorpio Group’s Ole Chr. Schroder moderated panel presentations on what the future of shipping will entail from various perspectives, while NAMEPA Co-Founder/CEO Carleen Walker chaired a leadership roundtable of the Award winners which focused on bridging the past with the future to determine what action needs to be taken today.
The prestigious NAMEPA Marine Environment Protection Awards for 2022 were presented at the Anniversary Dinner that evening. Winners included ABS for the Industry Award, Port of Long Beach, Kai Martin from Pasha Group being honored as an Individual, Blue Sky Maritime Coalition for Association, Seamen’s Church Institute, Department of Energy’s Wind Power Technologies Office, Principle Power for Innovation, Dr. Michael Alfultis of SUNY Maritime, and Cargill for Sustainability.
NAMEPA’s Marine Environment Protection Awards are given in recognition of an individual or organization’s innovative and extraordinary effort to commit themselves to preserving the marine environment as exemplified by a commitment to programs which have specific objectives set for environmental performance and improvement. The award winners each received framed certificates and a desk trophy presented to them by the sponsor of the award along with NAMEPA Chairman Joe Hughes and the USCG’s VADM Peter Gautier, Deputy Commandant for Operations (DCO).
The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) was officially launched in October of 2007 in the presence of IMO Secretary General Efthymios Mitropoulos, Vice Commandant Vivien Crea, and INTERMEPA Chairman Nicky Pappadakis. It has grown from an initial membership of 33 to over 200 today. Its programs span Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean and reach both the maritime industry as well as educating port communities, seafarers and students to Save Our Seas. Further, NAMEPA works to communicate the value proposition of the maritime industry as the engine of global trade.
