Spring 2022 Outreach: West Coast

The NAMEPA team set a schedule to visit members, partners and students after a hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.
We met with NAMEPA members, the Port of Long Beach and the Marine Exchange of SoCal to talk about member benefits, share about sustainable best practices and community programming educating on protecting the marine environment. NAMEPA met with Seafarer’s International to talk about seafarer wellness and education programs offered by NAMEPA. We attended their spring fundraiser to meet seafarers and other community members.
It was great to see our partners Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) and Al We joined a virtual workshop on Maritime Careers with LAMI to deliver our message on the many diverse maritime careers available to youth and the need in the maritime industry for young people to join! We delivered to over 300 students in grades 3-8. AltaSea held their City of STEM Celebrating our Blue Ocean Open House on Saturday, April 23rd where NAMEPA joined to engage with over 400 community members about the importance of protecting the marine environment.
We attended the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Earth Day, April 22nd, along with NAMEPA member, the Port of Los Angeles and others to talk about important topics in the local community. NAMEPA met with several organizations to talk about ways to collaborate and share aligned missions to promote the maritime industry and careers pathways, (EXP Future) and educating on protecting the marine environment (The Mammal Care Center and Algalita).
Our meeting with EXP Future led us to join a Career Fair at Manuel Dominquez High School in Compton, CA to share with students about career pathways in the maritime industry. The Career Fair had over 300 students walk through to learn about career pathways from the over 20 exhibitors.
We continue to develop our members and partners in Southern California as it is an important hub in promoting marine industry best practices and education on the importance of protecting the marine environment. It is NAMEPA’s goal to fully develop hub’s throughout North America to keep the conversation relevant and show measurable impact on our efforts to Save Our Seas.
