Dec. 1, 2020 – The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) has awarded the American Club and Shipowners Claims Bureau, Inc. its “Maritime Sustainability Passport” (MSP) Certificate and Seal. The MSP is awarded to companies, organizations and individuals who meet the requirements of the program which encompasses the three pillars of CSR/ESG: corporate governance, environment and the human element. The American Club is the first service provider to conclude the program.
The American Club qualified for NAMEPA’s MSP by successfully completing all three phases of the program, including supplying supporting documentation for its claims. Their submission was evaluated by a team of assessors to determine whether they met the criteria of the CSR/ESG program, which upon confirmation, made them eligible to receive the MSP Certificate and Seal.
“We congratulate the American Club as the first company to qualify as a service provider for NAMEPA’s Maritime Sustainability Passport,” said NAMEPA Co-Founder and Executive Director Carleen Lyden Walker. “Through this effort, they have demonstrated both their commitment to sustainability as well as their capacity.”
The MSP Seal is used to signify the participant met or exceeded the program’s benchmarks, which offers basic guidelines for the maritime industry along with a Tool Kit to help achieve them and develop best practices using CSR/ESG principles. Some of the program’s benefits include increased efficiency, stakeholder visibility, and positive global impact and social license.
“Protecting the marine environment necessitates the multi-faceted approach through the participation support of shipowners and key stakeholders alike,” said Dr. William Moore, SVP and Global Director of Loss Prevention at the American Club’s Managers, SCB Inc. “The CSR/ESG certification process gave us an opportunity to further assess our role and competencies to improve in our partnership role in support of our shipowner Members. We are pleased that our efforts resulted in being awarded the Maritime Sustainability Passport.”’
