Thurs, Oct 11: Billion Oyster Project to host a panel discussion on the intersection of Restoration and Education, at the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School’s 15th anniversary celebration
New York, NY, Sep 19, 2018:
Leaders in the maritime, education, and environmental industries join together to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the New York Harbor School.
The Harbor School 15th Anniversary Celebration is a day of festivities kicking off with a Founders Luncheon hosted by NBC’s own Willie Geist at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. The Honorable Mark H. Buzby, Maritime Administrator will serve as keynote speaker, and the school’s founding partners will be honored: New Visions for Public Schools, NYC Department of Education, South Street Seaport Museum, United Federation of Teachers, The Urban Assembly, and Waterkeeper Alliance.

During the luncheon, an “Education through Restoration” panel will be led by Saskia Levy Thompson of the Carnegie Corporation of NY with panelists including Robin Bramwell-Stewart of the Port Authority, Ayana Elizabeth Johnson of Ocean Collectiv, Carleen Lyden Walker of NAMEPA (North American Marine Environment Protection Association), and Tanasia Swift, Harbor School alum and BOP employee.
After lunch, guests will enjoy a cruise on NY Harbor landing on Governors Island where guests will first be treated to an open house at the New York Harbor School followed by an oyster party at the neighboring Island Oyster.
Tickets are available here and sponsorship opportunities are available here.
Proceeds from the event will support the students at the New York Harbor School and their work in one of seven career and technical education (CTE) programs of study: Aquaculture, Marine Biology and Research, Marine Systems Technology, Marine Policy and Advocacy, Ocean Engineering, Professional Diving, and Vessel Operations. Through this course work students gain access to industry certification in marine science or technology, and the program includes a continuum of work-based learning experiences that bring classroom learning into a real-world, work-related context.
